Blue Aurene Vase

Listen as curator Jane Shadel Spillman describes Blue Aurene Vase, designed by Frederick Carder. Aurene glass was one of the earliest color effects created by Frederick Carder for Steuben Glass Works. It was first made as an iridescent gold-colored glass, but by 1904 Carder had developed blue Aurene glass.

According to Carder, the word Aurene is derived from the chemical symbol for gold and the word sheen. The shape of the Aurene vase seen here was made from about 1910 until the mid-1920s. However, this example was a gift in 1921, so it can be dated more precisely.
