Big thanks to the publisher for sending this book over

Hand Drawn Vancouver is a travelogue style sketchbook from Emma Fitzgerald, an artist and author based in Canada. Fitzgerald was born in South Africa, moved to Vancouver at a young age, move out again, and back to Vancouver.

This 152-page hardcover features the places, buildings and people of Vancouver, Canada. There are personal stories from Emma as she talks about her childhood and how the city has changed many years later. I like that feeling of nostalgia as I read about her experiences even if I’ve never been to Vancouver. There are also many lovely interactions with people as they approach Emma to talk, to look at her drawings. That’s what I like about drawing on location. You get to be in the moment and sometimes people will just tell you interesting things about the place or even about their lives.

I enjoyed this book as much as Fitzgerald’s earlier two books, Sketch by Sketch: Along Nova Scotia’s South Shore and Hand Drawn Halifax: Portraits of the city’s buildings, landmarks, neighbourhoods and residents. I like the loose and sketchy drawings accompanied by personal stories. It’s a wonderful way to go about documenting and remembering the place you’ve been and lived in.
