Boston University’s School of Visual Arts is delighted to announce Multiple Formats: Contemporary Art Book Symposium, an event weaving together conversations related to artist books and higher education, pedagogical practices involving artist books, artist advocacy, and artist book distribution. Organized by Associate Professor Christopher Sleboda, co-founder of Draw Down Books and organizer of Yale University Art Gallery’s Odds and Ends Art Book Fair, the symposium is intended to be an elastic and inclusive forum for discussions about artist book publishing, with a particular focus on publishing by graphic designers, the use and creation of artist books in visual arts programs, and other topics of interest. The symposium — which is free and open to the public — is meant to build community and strengthen creative networks, create a forum for resource sharing, and offer substantive discussion about sustaining a practice that includes artist books.
The symposium will be held February 25–26, 2022, with a keynote lecture planned for Thursday evening, February 24. The keynote speaker will be Sonel Breslav, Director of Fairs and Editions for Printed Matter, Inc. An organizer and program director with more than a decade of experience in production, publishing, and curating, Breslav is currently responsible for the development and production of the annual New York and Los Angeles Art Book Fairs. She’s also the founder of Blonde Art Books (2012–2017) and the Bushwick Art Book & Zine Fair (BABZ Fair), an event that featured over a hundred small press publishers and individual artists from 2013 to 2017.

The symposium is sponsored by the Boston University School of Visual Arts. BU School of Visual Arts includes both graduate and undergraduate programs, with programs including Graphic Design, Painting, Sculpture, and Art Education. Two new programs — an MFA in Visual Narrative and an MFA in Print Media & Photography — launch in Fall 2022.
