Bridges and castles hide portals to other worlds in Andrew McIntosh’s paintings

Portals into other worlds like the ones found in Andrew McIntosh‘s paintings would be fascinating to encounter in real life.

The Scottish painter is a master of creating exquisitely detailed and atmospheric scenes of bridges, castles, and old medieval-inspired homes. His unique twist comes by way of replacing some of the structure’s windows and empty spaces with portals to other worlds.

In an essay about McIntosh’s works, Dr. Richard Davey writes, “They are born from deep knowledge of the land, painted by an artist who wants to probe the limits of landscape painting, who knows that nature is much quieter than it is more usually portrayed, and that capturing the undramatic, ordinariness of nature, is more difficult than it may seem.”
