Street Vendors in Vietnam

Brazilian photographer Dietrich Herlan balances his love of travel and fine art photography with his background as an electrical and electronic engineer. The self-taught photographer follows his passion, working as a full-time location photographer and supplementing his income with freelance electronic engineering work in order to fund his travels. This has allowed him to visit over 50 countries and capture their unique beauty.

While in Vietnam, Herlan was fascinated by the street vendors he watched from a balcony in Hanoi. These vendors, who often sell fruit from two baskets balanced on a bamboo shoulder frame, are an integral part of daily life. Their unique, culturally significant presence inspired Herlan to get creative and photograph them from a new angle. However, getting the composition he desired took a lot of tenacity and patience.

“I wanted to make sure that I would photograph only the street vendors in the images without distractions, such as cars or tourists, in order to capture the perfect image,” Herlan tells My Modern Met. “To do that I spent hours on cafe balconies and bridges under the really hot sun waiting for the street vendors to pass by and capture the right moment.”

The results are an interesting dissection of traditional life in Hanoi, whether the vendors are cycling or carrying their wares. With baskets overflowing or nearly empty after a hard day’s work, it’s fascinating to study the items carried by each vendor. Herlan hopes that his images show people the beauty of street vendors and their important contributions to Vietnamese culture.

By highlighting this slice of life, Herlan’s photos allow viewers to get a sense of the different ways vendors contribute to Hanoi’s social fabric. While his travel photography also focuses on architecture and portraiture, these candid images are part of a cohesive series that narrates an untold story of the city.

Prints of Herlan’s photographs are available for sale via his website.
