Carl Hansen & Søn Releasing Special Birthday Edition of the Wishbone Chair

To celebrate famed furniture designer Hans J. Wegner’s birthday this year, Carl Hansen & Søn is releasing a special version of his Wishbone Chair, originally designed in 1949 (and in production ever since!). The limited-edition run will be produced in oiled oak, and with a more labor-intensive version of the woven seat.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

Interestingly, this version of the chair was conceived of by The Lab, Carl Hansen & Søn’s apprentice workshop in Denmark, which trains 20 young cabinet makers each year.

And in an age where established furniture manufacturers often have to worry about knockoffs from a certain country, the company makes no bones about the Wishbone’s design inspiration:

“Wegner drew inspiration for the CH24 Wishbone Chair from portraits of Danish merchants sitting in chairs from the Ming Dynasty, the golden age of Chinese design which was known for sleek furniture forms.”

“The Wishbone Chair is a symbol of craftsmanship with more than 100 steps required to manufacture each chair, most of which are carried out by hand. The hand-woven seat alone takes a skilled craftsman about an hour to create and the special edition chair features an intertwined seat pattern with double plain weave which takes twice as long to complete. Wegner’s Wishbone Chair embodies impressive durability and stability making the piece strong and long-lasting.”

The chair will be released on March 30th.
