Los Angeles-based illustrator Jenny Yu captures the under-appreciated transient moments of life through her ever-growing collection of digital art. From golden morning light filtering through the curtains to walks through rain-slicked city streets, Yu’s atmospheric illustrations capture moods that we can all relate to. She explains, “It’s in these idle, solitary moments I sometimes feel most human and contemplative, and I think those are the feelings I’m trying my best to depict.”

Yu fell in love with illustration as a child, when she discovered animations such as Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. She recalls, “I was so touched, not only by the story but by the sheer artistry of the film. It was so beautiful, and to think that all these artists could make something so meaningful.” Yu’s distinct illustration style has a magical quality that looks like a surreal mix between digital drawing and analog photography. Many works feature diffused, colorful specks of light and a hazy, grainy texture. Just like a photograph, Yu’s art is able to perfectly capture the many fleeting moments of modern life.
“I think illustrations are a way to capture a single moment and feeling that can be particularly intense,” Yu reveals. “Sometimes I see the way light hits a certain material and I think, ‘Wow, that’s so incredibly beautiful. I hope I can show someone else how beautiful and wondrous this feels to me’ ”
