Chia-En Jao talks about returning to Taiwan after 10 years in Europe, describing his firsthand experience of political incidents and reflecting on the ways in which politics, narrative, and collective experience inform his work. The artist also discusses his video “Taxi” (2016), which explores varying interpretations of Taiwan’s history as seen through the eyes of taxi drivers.
“Taxi” was commissioned for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection as part of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative. The second exhibition of the initiative, “Tales of Our Time,” is on view at the museum November 4, 2016–March 10, 2017.
