Child Studio Creates a London Restaurant Clad in Pink Formica

Child Studio just recently finished the design of a new restaurant on King’s Road in London called Humble Pizza. Known for its association with British fashion, music, and pop culture, the neighborhood offered vast inspiration to the designers when creating the Instagram-friendly interior.

The can’t-miss-it pink exterior stops traffic right from the start and continues inside with wall-to-wall pink Formica. Child Studio turned to the Formica factory and worked with them to recreate the original, 1970s ‘linen’ pattern in a ‘Millennial pink’ color. The designers have always had an affinity for 1950s British cafes, known as ‘Formica caffs,’ which combine a Modernist design feel with a “playful, almost cartoonish spirit.”

The pink Formica pops up on the counter fronts and tabletops, in addition to the walls, all of which are framed with rich cherry wood. Mid-century lighting, by European designers Poul Henningsen, Jacque Biny, and Luigi Massoni, adds another layer of the past.

Patrons can watch their plant-based pizzas being made in an illuminated prep space at the back of the shop.
