Notorious British artist Damien Hirst has unveiled his latest project, ‘Black Scalpel Cityscapes’ at White Cube gallery in São Paolo, Brazil. On display until January 2015, the series is a collection of massive paintings made entirely out of sharp objects like safety pins, surgical blades, fish hooks, zips, needles, stainless steel studs, and gloss paint.
Each piece is Hirst’s monochromatic portrait of an actual city in the world, presented from a bird’s eye view. From afar, they’re recognizable like a Google Earth map, but up close, they reveal themselves to be intricately arranged blades. Among the cities featured are Paris, Berlin, London, San Francisco, Washington, Rio, Hong Kong, and Leeds.
