Classical portraits taking selfies prove that the millennials are not the first narcissistic generation

A few recent viral stories seem to be an effort by the millennials to prove that just because they invented the selfie does not mean they are the first self-indulgent, narcissistic generation. The previous story of classical sculptures snapping selfies and now this series of classical paintings snapping selfies proves that they (we) might be right after all.

Denmark-based designer Olivia Muus shot this series of portraits of portraits on a recent museum visit. The funny images make the classic paintings of royalty look like they are taking images of themselves with a modern day smartphone. This perspective highlights that the painter was essentially the 17th-century “camera” and not much has changed in last few hundred years… right?
