Clever GPS shoes that lead you home, or wherever else you desire to go by foot!

London-based designer, Dominic Wilcox’s award winning blog ‘Variations on Normal’ chronicles his fecund bank of ideas, observations and inventions. Wilcox continually re-examines taken-for-granted functions; in his world everything is up for alteration from the way we hear to the tops of our shoes. Among many other things, Wilcox invented maraca-toothbrushes that lace one’s early morning ritual with a musical-beat, as well as a model for a walking suitcase that can track its owner.

One of my favorite designs is his ‘No Place Like Home, GPS Shoes,’ commissioned by the Global Footprint project in Northamptonshire. Inspired by Dorothy’s shoes from “The Wizard of Oz,” these shoes guide their owner home. The GPS is activated by clicking one’s heels together, then a ring of LED lights on the tip of the shoe guides their owner to the correct location.
