For many couples, engagement photos are an important—and public—showcase of their relationship, and it’s worth putting some thought into what story they tell. While some go down the traditional route of polite smiles and scenic locations, other couples see it as their chance to shine. One husband-and-wife-to-be who took their couple photoshoot to the next level is New York-based Jackie Nguyen and Nate Huntley, who—photographed by Isaac James—decided to honor their favorite pop culture duos.

Both actors, Nguyen and Huntley met while working on a production of Miss Saigon. At first, they “didn’t think it was anything more than a ‘show-mance,’” they tell My Modern Met in an email. The pair felt they had something special, but didn’t want to put a label on it, so ended up parting ways. However, a week later Nguyen told Huntley she had sadly started losing her hair to alopecia. And shortly after, she visited Huntley at his home in Colorado, where they both shaved their heads in solidarity, and made their relationship “official.”
“My fiancé and I are extremely outside of the box, and felt like traditional photos wouldn’t encompass the fun or adventure we like to have,” reveals Nguyen. After brainstorming ideas, the inseparable duo decided to recreate their favorite TV and movie scenes, but instead of just one photoshoot, they decided to make it a year-long project. “We had the idea of having a typical setting, like a field of flowers or a mountain range that you see normally, but having us dress in full costume, like Chewbacca and Yoda.” explained Nguyen. “From that idea, sprouted a fully fledged idea of dressing up as our favorite characters.”
The self-confessed nerds created a list of characters, gathered the costumes, and planned the locations. However, Nguyen reveals, “We couldn’t have done this photoshoot without our infamous photographer and friend, Isaac James.” “He’d shape and mold us during each shoot […] and made us laugh the whole time.” From Home Alone bandits to the heroes of Jurassic Park, the result is a hilarious and adorable collection of images that capture the couple’s intimate connection, as well as their superb sense of fun.
