Cuban designers launch chair collection

Havana-based designers Raiko Valladares and Jose A. Villa have launched a chair collection that will be produced in Cuba. The chair’s inspiration stems from the country’s thriving music scene by mirroring the aesthetic of stringed instruments in their stringed chairs.

As the international relations between Cuba and the U.S. are shifting, the duo looks at growing opportunities for small-scale manufacturing. “Our main purpose is to show what can be done with design in Cuba, and that with common materials and without particularly sophisticated resources, new shapes can be accomplished,” said the designers. Their hope to evolve their designs to use more sophisticated materials as higher quality supplies become available.
