The clever people at ETH Zurich have just unveiled a video of their new mobile robotic cube. The ‘Cubli’ moves by running high-speed flywheels and abruptly stopping them to transfer momentum to the box itself. The result hurls Cubli in different directions allowing it to move.
Although this seems like a highly inefficient mode of movement the beauty is in the balance. Cubli can hurl itself up onto any one of its corners and balance there before again going forward. The cube can even maintain its balance when poked or pushed!
