Dead sperm whale washes along the banks of the Seine River to spread environmental awareness

Many Parisians were shocked and caught off guard by the appearance of a seemingly dead sperm whale on the River Seine. The humungous sea animal, although very realistic in appearance, is fortunately only an art installation made by the Belgian Captain Boomer Collective in the effort of spreading awareness about various environmental issues.

The sperm whale installation has already been seen around the world since 2013. The movement first appeared in London’s Thames River and eventually popped up in cities such as Rennes, Antwerp, Valencia, and Duisburg. To make the art installation look more convincing to the passersby, the setting is staged with actors dressed as specialists to educate people on the causes and effects of the tragedy.

“The psychological archetype of the dead big fish leaves no one untouched,” said Captain Boomer Collective. “The sperm whale appeals to everyone. It is the place where everyone gets together. That’s why it is vital it beaches on a public spot that is freely accessible.”
