A mid-century homes inspired desert house by Studio AR&D Architects.
Completed in 2016 by the architects of Studio AR&D, this guard house was originally intended as a gateway to a long-awaited residential development, located on the hillside overlooking Palm Springs. Upon initial visits, it was evident that the house should reflect the typical style of the homes intended to be built here, while complimenting the raw terrain of this location. The chosen materials were selected for their timelessness, durability, and fitting characteristics to the desert environment.
The massive boulder appears very close to the roof but it’s not quite connecting to it physically. This way, they have created this fascinating tension between the two structures. The natural and man-made structures seem to speak to the other while still remaining elusive of one another. Steel and concrete were chosen as the main materials for their strength and ability to resist an extreme amount of tension and compression. Just have a look below.
