The 9th edition of Designmonat Graz (Month of Design) 2017 took place from the 29 of April to 28 of May of 2017 at Graz, in Austria.
Designmonat Graz is a festival with a dense and diverse programme embracing all disciplines of design, including a great number of individual initiatives by designers, local design education institutions and universities as well as economic players. An extensive programme provides an insight into different creative disciplines: events such as exhibitions, workshops or lectures invite you to networking in the UNESCO City of Design Graz.
This edition focuses on ‘Smart Design – Smart Production’ and deals with the age of digital networking and the multifarious tools of the Digital Revolution. The protagonists of the creative industries – developers, researchers, programmers and designers – are the ones who created and enabled the new technological age; there were also plans for a ‘Smartness Conference’ on this subject.
Moreover, this time, the festival takes place for the ninth time with SELECTED, the biggest interior and product design exhibition in Austria.
Selected
This year’s selection builds a bridge between various approaches and definitions of contemporary design. The exhibition is embedded in the Museum of Natural History at Universalmuseum Joanneum and displays award-winning novelties as well as progressive trials and innovative ideas in the field of interior and product design.

Secret Room 202
Offering a distinctive street avant-garde collection which is both functional and sophisticated in its simplicity, the Secret Room caters for local and international fashion partisans. The carefully selected pieces which reflect a cultured urban lifestyle exude a sense of timelessness.
Brillenquartier
The optics company Brillenquartier of Christian Potisk present the new collection of glasses and sunshades by Mykita. What is unusual about the creations of the German label is the joint, which does without any screws or solder connections. Instead, the components are bowed and folded, so that the largely minimalistic eyewear can actually be ‘bent’.
Be Urban – Be Bo Concept
BoConcept made a design workshop with the students of HTL Moedling under the motto ‘Be urban – Be BoConcept’. The origin for the creative analysis of the materials and the object was the Ottawa chair, designed by the internationally operating designer Karim Rashid.

The Orange Age
The 70s are – as the persistent retro trend suggests – as popular as no other decade. This exhibition reviews a dynamic and highly creative era of the 20th century by showcasing selected objects and exhibits. Audio and TV devices, communication devices and office machines show how close (a lot of things still look familiar) and at the same time far (the analogue mode has disappeared once and for all) this period that was significant for the development of media as well as deign appears.
