In conjunction with the exhibition Coded: Art Enters the Computer Age, 1952–1982, artist Analivia Cordeiro and computer scientist Nilton Lobo will lead a dance and movement workshop where participants will be guided through movement exercises and create original choreography inspired by relationships between the body, movement, visual and audiovisual art, and media technology. No previous dance experience required.

The workshop is presented in two parts and will take place at LACMA over two days. Each session runs approximately 2.5 hours. All requests for accommodation can be sent to @email. This program is open to participants ages 18 and up.

About the Participants

Analivia Cordeiro has been exploring the relationships between the body, movement, visual and audiovisual art, and media art since the early 1970s. Her seminal 1973 work M 3×3 is considered the first video artwork to come out of South America and internationally one of the first dance choreographies created specifically for video, using computer image processing to notate the dance movements.

Nilton Lobo is an engineer and created the notation software for human movement called Nota-Anna, which registers the trajectory of movement in space and time and makes it visible on a computer screen or with other digital tools

Day 1: Saturday, June 17 | 10:30 am–1 pm

This introductory workshop includes a presentation on the evolution of motion capture research and the movement notation software called Nota-Anna. The second part of this workshop will focus on movement and body exercises based on technology-informed choreography first developed in the 1970s and 1980s.  Comfortable attire and yoga mats are recommended. Folding stools will be provided.

Day 2: Sunday, June 18 | 10:30 am–1 pm

This workshop is a continuation of the previous day’s program and focuses on the creation of original choreography using movement notation and motion capture technology. At the end of the workshop, guests share reflections with the facilitators and fellow participants. Comfortable attire and yoga mats are recommended. Folding stools will be provided.
