One of the easiest way I found is that if you are not familiar with the subject, you will have to find some references. Having reference while you work can be very useful. And it does not mean that you have to copy from the reference. You can use your reference piece as inspiration, light source, design or many more reasons you can use them for.
This tutorial I use an image of an underwater humpback whale to get some idea of how to light the scene under the water. I also borrow the color scheme or palette from it. The idea is not to copy exactly from the reference, but use it as a starting point or use it to inspire.
Tips on speedpainting. Keep it simple first and make your image clear and easy to read or identify.
Things you should focus on primarily.
1) Shapes
2) Lighting and mood
3) Edges and depth of field.
