American artist and designer, Christopher Stuart, designed the Drape Series to look as if the pieces were “digitally draped” in fabric. Using a tool in CAD software, Stuart is able to mimic the look of fabric as if it was thrown over a piece of furniture, in this case a chair and a shelf.

Generic, block-like understructures were first modeled to get the furniture shape. Then, a “fabric” shell of fiberglass with a pearlized automative paint finish was draped over, as if someone threw the fabric from the front, not from overhead. The software easily simulates the falling look from above using the default setting, but Stuart wanted something more interesting and changed the variables up to get unique looks. The results fall between looking like the forms they are referencing and digital.
Christopher Stuart’s Drape Series will be a part of the Sight Unseen curated, USA pavilion, Assembly, at this year’s London Design Fair.
