Just as J.R.R. Tolkien originally wrote The Hobbit for his own children, so artist James Gurney created Dinotopia for his own children’s entertainment. And, like Tolkien, he realized that it could become a commercial success as well, which it certainly did.
At its inception in the early 1990’s, Dinotopia was a fantasy world in which humans lived peaceably and harmoniously with dinosaurs, or rather, with the herbivore dinosaurs. The carnivores are still the bad guys in this world.
Dinotopia is James Gurney’s website devoted to his creation, and many of his Dinotopia paintings and related topics can be found therein. He has a personal website that highlights all of his works, and it must be admitted that the man is one talented artist. Show this posting to your kids at your own financial peril.
