Drone operators are now faced with the image of a Pakistan strike victim each time they fly over

As a result of the grainy resolution of drone video footage the military has popularized a slang phrase for a kill – “Bug Splat.” An artist collective consisting of Americans, Pakistanis and the French artist JR, were disgusted by the insensitivity and questionable practices of drone strikes in Pakistan and came up with a public art project to highlight these issues.

The project called ‘#NotABugSplat‘ depicts a nameless child, whose parents and siblings were killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2010. The image was printed on a massive scale and laid out in a field in the heavily bombed Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa region of Pakistan. According to the project’s website, “Now, when viewed by a drone camera, what an operator sees on his screen is not an anonymous dot on the landscape, but an innocent child victim’s face.”
