Earn Your MFA in Visual Art at Herron School of Art and Design

The MFA in visual art program at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI emphasizes interdisciplinary fluency through an individualized, holistic approach to artmaking and creative inquiry. Students can embrace diverse studio-based practices to address ideas, concepts, theories, and issues in various contexts. Ceramics, drawing, printmaking, furniture design, painting, photography, and sculpture are all areas of emphasis for experimentation, with dedicated facilities for each discipline.

With 10 core faculty members committed to a two-year cohort of up to 10 candidates, the MFA in visual art program fosters a strong graduate community and close mentorship in and out of the classroom. Renowned artists and scholars are frequently invited to campus for lecture series and class visits through the Herron Galleries and faculty connections. Past guest speakers include Ghada Amer, Tarik Carroll, Sonya Clark, Donna Ferrato, Ann Hamilton, Alicia Henry, George Page, Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley, Sylvie Rosenthal, Tom Sachs, Jonathan Michael Square, Kenneth E. Tyler, Lori Waxman, Carrie Mae Weems, and Tuguldur Yondonjamts.

MFA candidates receive a semi-private studio in Eskenazi Hall or Eskenazi Fine Arts Center, located next to the 16 Tech Innovation District. Competitive scholarships, fully or partially funded fellowships, and teaching assistantships are available. Fellowships are given out on a semester basis and can be combined with scholarships and tuition waivers.

Herron’s MFA program, located in downtown Indianapolis, takes advantage of IUPUI’s urban research campus and the city’s vibrant, growing art scene to provide dynamic academic engagement and myriad opportunities. On and off campus, thoughtful collaborations with peers, professors, and community partners offer professional development.
