Elaborate snow drawings bring out artistry in winter weather

Using the environment to create large-scale artworks, Sonja Hinrichsen’s ‘Snow Drawings’ series has captured the public’s attention. The “drawings” are made by walking patterns into pristine snow cover. Not only are the resulting pieces beautifully captured, showing the exquisite line work, but the drawings are a result of efforts by community volunteers.

When seeing the snow drawings in aerial photographs there is a visual similarity to embroidery. The many footsteps from snowshoes become like the delicate stitch-work of thread and needle.

In her 2014 piece ‘We are the Water,’ Hinrichsen visualized the original flow of the Yampa River and its four main tributaries. The piece was completed by 50 volunteers over the course of four hours. The photographs were taken the following day.
