England’s Pallant House Gallery explores the history and development of woodblock printing

Pallant House Gallery in England has launched “The Woodcut: From Dürer to Now,” an exhibition that explores the history of woodblock printing, from the famed Japanese tradition of ukiyo-e, which began in the 8th century through the Western assimilation of the art form, with Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) as one of the forerunners of the craft in that part of the world.

Dürer’s 1504 work “Repose on the Flight into Egypt,” which shows a scene from “The Life of the Virgin” and is one of the pieces on view in the exposition, is said to represent a groundbreaking moment in the history of woodblock printing in that it introduced a new approach and a more subtle technique to the art, this despite the theme being a traditional one.

Other pieces in exhibition include those by other earlier woodcut masters such as Utagawa Hiroshige, Edward Wadsworth and Ben Nicholson, as well as those by contemporary artists Rebecca Salter and Emma Stibbons, among others.

“The Woodcut: From Dürer to Now” is open until June 25 at Pallant House Gallery.
