Expand Your Practice With New York Studio School’s MFA, Certificate, and Virtual Certificate

As a full-time student at the New York Studio School, you will join an exceptional community of artists, study with dedicated instructors, and cultivate the skills and methods that will prepare you for a lifetime of art making. The two-year MFA and three-year Certificate & Virtual Certificate programs offer artists the opportunity to expand the depth of their studio practice in their chosen area of study: painting or sculpture, with drawing as an integral component of the curriculum.

Each semester begins with the school’s signature two-week Marathon, followed by 12 weeks of coursework and independent studio work, bolstered by the school’s Evening Lecture Series and weekly seminar, professional practice workshops, one-on-one faculty guidance, frequent critiques, exhibition opportunities, cohort discussions, and faculty-guided trips to the museums, galleries and artist studios of New York City and beyond.

Led by internationally distinguished artists and dedicated teachers, the school’s experiential pedagogy encourages students to work hard and think searchingly, establishing ethical and philosophical frameworks for their life’s work.

First-Year MFA Painting Studio

MFA Program
One of the few graduate programs to focus solely on drawing, painting, and sculpture, the MFA reveals crucial questions within a supportive, rigorous environment enabling students to construct an ethical and philosophical framework for their life’s work. The 60-credit, two-year curriculum begins with intensive studio classes in the first year and shifts to focus on the development of personal vision in the second year of study. The MFA Critical Studies seminar explores a range of theoretical approaches to art-making and culminates with a thesis paper and Thesis Exhibition, a spirited event well attended by the New York art world. Enrollment is limited to 15 MFA students per year, for a total of 30 artists.

The application priority deadline is January 15, 2023.

Certificate & Virtual Certificate Programs
The Certificate Programs offer an invaluable opportunity for artists to experience the school’s learning-through-making pedagogy, supportive faculty direction, and a wide variety of classes rooted in perceptual study. The three-year program culminates in the Certificate Completion Exhibition. Artists can join the Certificate in either the Fall or Spring semester and have the option to switch between attending in-person or virtually on a semester-by-semester basis.

Application priority deadlines are January 15, 2023, for the Fall semester and October 15, 2023, for the Spring semester.
