Exquisitely carved skeletons that allude to the past lives of objects

Maskull Lasserre’s work, ranging from sculpture to interactive mixed media, has been shown in Canada, the United Sates and Europe. Coming from a background with a scientist-father and a painter-mother, it follows that Lasserre often uses biology as a metaphor in his work. Obviously a skilled craftsman, Lasserre’s ambitious projects are executed with a contemplative sensitivity.

In his series ‘Outliers (Trace)’ he attached the positive impressions of hooves and paws onto shoe soles, so that the wearer can make animal tracks. In his series ‘Fable’ and ‘Incarnate’ the remnants of animals and humans are carved into frames, piano legs, coat hangers, and stacks of paper—infusing these objects with a mysterious sense of history. By alluding to the object’s death, Lasserre emphasizes its past life as well.
