Famous Monsters of Filmland

The magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland was must-reading when I was a lad in the 1960’s. Forrest J. Ackerman and James Warren started it in 1958, and it ran for as long as I used to keep track of it, and I was surprised to find it still in publication today, although it has been discontinued and resurrected at least once over the intervening decades.

Today’s magazine is not what it was 55 years ago when I used to read it voraciously, but that is not a bad thing. Instead of sole emphasis on the older horror films such as the 1931 Frankenstein, today’s magazine features exposes on more modern horror such as The Walking Dead.

We’re in luck though, as many of the past issues are now available for free online. This archive contains about 125 issues and they are easy reading. I cannot vouch for their graphics today, but the issues I used to read were ‘safe’ for the family. So have a look through a few and see what you think, if you’re a horror buff as I know Miss Cellania is.
