Artist Jose Cifuentes infuses freedom of expression in both style and concept into his abstract and figurative paintings. See more by visiting his website.
My artistic practice is rooted in my embodiment of the visual expression of freedom.
I look to my own experiences as a Colombian immigrant in North America, often marked by instability and restriction.
In response, my work translates into breaking free from the “norm” or societal understanding of what is known, to the truth of how life is by expressing its emotional havoc.
I started out as a street artist and the traditional use of spray paint and markers remain in my work, and I also incorporate the use of acrylic and oil paint. The resulting canvases oscillate between the abstract and the figurative, stylistically defying categorization.
Freedom. Freedom of expression in both style and concept. Freedom in the thread that binds the works in my oeuvre.

Born in Medellin, Colombia, in 1984 I moved to the United States as a teenager. I completed a diploma from Bergen Community College in New Jersey where I studied Fine Arts. In 2009, I moved back to Medellin where I founded the award-winning clothing brand beFREE.
In 2016, I moved to Toronto where I continue to live and work. My studio is located in the well-known 401 Richmond studios.
My work has been featured in fairs and exhibitions internationally, including Red Dot Miami, Gallery 1313, Toronto, ARTA Gallery, Toronto, Distrito Creativo el Perpetuo Socorro, Medellin and Monroe Center for the Arts, Hoboken, New Jersey.
I am the recipient of the Panasonic Creative Excellence Award and a 2019 Refugee and Newcomer Mentorship Grant from Toronto Arts Council. I am also a member of CARFAC Ontario and the TMFA Community, as well as serving on the board of Gallery 1313 in Toronto.
What motivates me to paint is infusing joy and freedom to people through my artwork and personality. Of course, having financial stability is a perk as I strive to destroy the stigma of the starving artist.
