I’m a native Massachusetts artist and have always been involved in some type of creative endeavor since I was a small child.

“My Favorite Posy” soft pastel, 6” x 6”

Over the past twenty years, I have worked primarily in soft pastel. Six years ago, when my daughter left for college, I turned my love of pastels into a full-time, successful small business.

“October Snow” soft pastel, 16″ x 20″

My love of the outdoors has kept me on a persistent path of working en plein air, to which I attribute the development of my own loose impressionistic style.

“Poor Man’s Fertilizer” soft pastel, 8” x 6”

My plein air work is fresh and filled with intuitive color choices and mark making. I like to capture my first impression of a scene, and translate that into my pastel painting.

“Towards the Light” soft pastel, 6” x 6”

I studied at the Worcester Art Museum for over a decade while working full-time as a paralegal. I’ve also taken many pastel intensive workshops with nationally known artists throughout my art career, including a plein air intensive workshop in Tuscany, and have attended the IAPS convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as well as the Plein Air Convention on three different occasions.

“Rising and Falling” soft pastel, 20″ x 16″

I am a workshop instructor and demonstrator all over the New England region, and am actively pursuing teaching workshops across the United States. In 2019, I taught a ten day plein air workshop in Umbria, Italy, at the La Romita School of Art.

“Cascading Light” soft pastel, 19″ x 12″

Being an outdoor painter has taught me a lot about simplifying the scene and working fast to capture the oftentimes fleeting moments of light and shadow.

“Scent-sational” soft pastel, 9″ x 12″

I am a shape driven artist, so I will look for three to five main shapes to begin my composition using the broad side of my pastel sticks in a painterly manner. I reserve the hard edges of the pastel stick for specific mark making.

“Perfectly Imperfect” soft pastel, 12″ x 9″

Some of my favorite work has been accomplished outdoors in very windy weather conditions. For example, my piece “Perfectly Imperfect,” was completed in wind driven gusts of pelting sand under a pier in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

I will always remember this work, not only for giving me my fifth point to become a Master Circle Pastel artist with the IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies), but for having a plein air work juried into such a prestigious exhibition.
