Filipino graffiti artist fills the streets of Manila with Zaha Hadid-inspired wall art

The Manila-based graffiti artist behind the street pseudonym Swtch Off only started developing his creative skills for graffiti seven years ago by filling up the back of his university notebooks with sketches instead of lectures. By his second year in college, his passion for wall art grew only further when he met the founders of locally-grown graffiti crew called GAK (Guerilla Aerosol Krew). From then on, he was able to translate his sketches into solid art.

Also an Architecture student, Swtch Off has already created a respectable number of 3D art resonating unique artistic visions. But like any other artist, focusing on organic strokes and lines was a necessary personal phase for him to go through. And artistic inspiration from the likes of Daim, Saber of AWR & MSK, and the “Queen of the Curve” Zaha Hadid only fueled his contoured dreams. All this has ultimately led him to create metamorphic lines that transform into sharp, hybrid shapes flawlessly blended into the art’s intended subject.

Talking about modern day graffiti in the Philippines, he believes it is “more alive” as opposed to the taboo generalization of it being a vandalism because of the continuously evolving artistic point of view of the great majority. He adds, “The most important part in creating art either on wall or anywhere is your style. It makes you stand out on all the art that surrounds the audience.”

When he’s not spraying on walls, he can be found drafting Architectural Designs, sketching the likes of Wolverine and Salt Bae, or collecting Star Wars action figures – because, “Star Wars is life.”
