It was a time when you could get drunk and dance on top of a table without having to worry about seeing it online in the morning, a time before social media so closely supervised our nightlifes, and for kids living in Camden between 2004 and 2011, it looked good. A new book by fashion photographer Robert Lang immortalizes these years. Filthy Gorgeous Camden Town, the 72-page visual archive dials its focus in on Camden’s eccentrics, it being, among other things, the stomping grounds of Amy Winehouse. Lang’s book follows a rambunctious cast of characters who each, in their own right, gives an unabashed look into life in early 21st century Camden.
The book began as a zine. Lang, in 2016, featured the images in an exhibition at the Doomed Gallery in London, where he caught the attention of a number of publications including i-D and The Observer Arts New Review. Writes Lang, “Photographing these characters from 2004, I never thought to put these photos out as I considered these my personal photos that we would all look at the next day and laugh at, which in the end became a photographic diary of events in our life.”

“It was quite the time to be living in Camden when everything was Indie, Rock, Punk, Vintage and we never left Camden to go out anywhere else,” Lang writes of his book. “I always carried a camera, so I was always photographing. Everything was very natural and organic. These women were smart, fashionable and witty; they represented everything about our period at that time in London.”
