First-ever permanent fashion museum in world’s style capital Paris to open in 2019

Paris, which has the distinction among many of being the style capital of the world, is getting its — believe it or not — first-ever permanent museum dedicated to fashion, which will be located in the Palais Galliera. This fruition is thanks to the financial support of fashion powerhouse Chanel, which donated $6 million towards the initiative.

Although it opened in 1894, the Palais Galliera had hitherto housed only temporary exhibitions. The 2019 opening of the Gabrielle Chanel Rooms in the museum will mark the first time ever that a permanent fashion exposition will take place there.

This initiative represents a lasting commitment to creation and to the strength of Paris, which are at the heart of Chanel’s business,” said Chanel Fashion President Bruno Pavlovsky.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo also expressed delight at the upcoming opening of the museum.

The city of Paris is proud to be able to open this exceptional space to Parisians and visitors from all over the world,” Hidalgo said during the 2017 Paris Fashion Week.

The permanent exhibit will be housed in the Palais Galliera’s basement.
