They Won’t Call It Murder is an intimate and subversive look at a community irrevocably altered by police violence. For 20 years, police killed dozens of residents — yet no officer has ever been charged with murder.
Five women bound by grief — mothers, sisters, and grandmothers — offer clear-eyed indictments of a justice system that has taken the lives of their loved ones. By focusing on the families of those killed, the film wrests the narrative of their deaths from law enforcement and the 24-hour news cycle and paints a compassionate portrait of loss and resistance.

They Won’t Call It Murder premiered at Sheffield Doc/Fest in September 2021, and has since screened at BAMcinemaFest, AFI FEST, and Camden International Film Festival. The film also screened as part of DOC NYC’s 2021 Short List: Shorts program.
This film is the directorial debut of Melissa Gira Grant and filmmaker Ingrid Raphaël, and produced by Ruun Nuur and Chase Whiteside.
