Coins have been explored as a means of creating elaborate artwork time and again.
The craft dates back to the 18th century and is known as colloquially as hobo nickel. Shaun Hughes is a UK-based engraver and one of the few still practicing the art with his own little twist. Hughes’ work focuses on the embellishment of faces that already exist on coins by incorporating floral scrollwork with them. The decorative pieces almost take the form of tattoos – if they were as elegant as this in the 18th century, that is. Check out some of Hughes’ coin portraits below and follow him on Instagram. He also sells many of his works on Ebay, so check that out too!
