When headlights changed from glass lenses to clear plastic (polycarbonate), something eventually happens to it to cause discoloration. The UV rays from the sun, road debris, salt and acid rain all degrade and discolour clear plastic lenses. To add to the cause is high-intensity headlights (like halogen) generates very high temperatures which also contributes to the degradation.
