While many people excitedly prepare for holiday celebrations, there’s one (very loud) tradition that our family pets want to escape from—fireworks. Though they can be fun for humans, the glittering explosives are terrifying, stressful, and even painful for many anxious dogs. That’s why car manufacturer Ford has designed a noise-cancelling dog kennel, providing a quiet retreat from the festivities.

Featuring noise-dampening cork panels and an automatic door, the modern minimalistic design utilizes the same noise control technology Ford built into its latest Edge SUV. The kennel detects high levels of noise with built-in microphones and then emits opposite frequencies to cancel them out. “We wondered how the technologies we use in our cars could help people in other situations,” says Lyn West, brand content manager at Ford of Europe. “Making sure dogs and their owners could enjoy a stress-free New Year’s Eve seemed like the perfect application for our Active Noise Control system, and we have a few more ideas in progress as to how our everyday lives might benefit from a little Ford know-how.”
The clever invention is the first in a series of initiatives, called Interventions, that explores how automotive technology can help solve everyday problems. It’s just a prototype for now, but you can keep up to date with production announcements on Twitter.
