There may be museums and galleries aplenty in New York, but they’re far from the only places to see art in the city. Over the next two weekends, several pockets of our local arts community are hosting open studios across the boroughs to share their creative energies with fellow artists and appreciators alike. While some of these upcoming events fall outside of the larger-scale efforts, like Gowanus Open Studios and Sunset Park Wide Open that take place in the fall, they’re certainly ushering in a wave of much-needed creative collaboration as the summer vibes ramp up day by day.
Below are four open studios events where you can find inspiration, meet artists, and even make your own work.

Greenpoint Open Studios
Greenpoint Open Studios is returning from a pandemic hiatus with over 200 participating artists opening their studios in a weekend filled with paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, pottery, print work, textiles, performance, and design. The weekend kicks off with a launch party from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, June 9, and the studios themselves will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm. Half-party and half-art crawl, Greenpoint Open Studios is free to the public and welcomes visitors from blue-chip gallerists to first-time visitors to the city. The Greenpoint Art Circle will also debut their group exhibition, Eye-Opening: Refreshing New Visions, during the Friday evening weekend launch party at Greenpoint Beer and Ale Company at 1150 Manhattan Avenue.

Park Slope Windsor Terrace Artists
Also returning from a three-year pause due to the pandemic, nearly 30 artists from the Park Slope Windsor Terrace Artists (PSWT) collective are opening their studios on June 3 and 4 from 12pm to 6pm as a part of the Fifth Avenue Art Stroll. Showcasing work across ceramics, photography, painting, assemblage, and collage, 13 artists have opted to open their studios directly to the public at several locations across the two neighborhoods, while Ossam Gallery at 300 7th Street will host an additional 13 artists on the main floor of its space. The Fifth Avenue Art Stroll will take place between 1st and 3rd Street on Saturday, June 3, from 12pm to 8pm as well. If it’s going to be a sunny day, I can’t think of a better way to spend my weekend besides weaving in and out of Prospect Park between studio visits, especially as this lines up with Brooklyn’s Open Streets scheduling.

UrbanGlass Brooklyn Open Studios and Workshops
On Saturday, June 3, UrbanGlass Studio is hosting a family-friendly open studios event filled with demonstrations and free or paid workshops in its 17,000-square-foot space on Fulton Street from 11am to 3pm. With opportunities for bead-making, designing a fused-glass coaster, foraying into glassblowing with a paperweight, and exploring other avenues of glassware and glass art, this open studios event is perfect for those who have been curious about the medium, but never quite had the impetus to explore it. The studio’s glassblowers will also be conducting various demonstrations that will provide insight into the development of the glassware we use without a second thought every day, fostering a newfound appreciation for the practice and the science behind it. This is an event suited for everyone and children 12 and up are welcome to participate in the glass workshops, so go stoke the flames and see if this is the start of your burgeoning glass career!

Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance
Several artists affiliated with the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) are presenting their work over the next two weekends for the 21st Annual Uptown Arts Stroll. Between June 3 and June 4, artists Cathy O’Keefe, Kathryn Ruby, and Susan Bresler will open their studios to the public, showcasing loads of new art for view and for sale. The Hamilton Heights Dark Room will also be open to the public on Sunday, June 4. During the following weekend, Natasha Beshenkovsky, Elizabeth Starcevic, and Rafaela Luna are excited to showcase their new works to the public. Each artist is available at different times, so be sure to double-check their schedules before jumping on the subway!
