Brad Spencer uses brick, a common construction material, to carve playful figure sculptures. Using such a standard material to make his art creates a double-take sensation and a ghostly feel to his playful scenes. His work creepily and elegantly depicts figures growing out of generic brick walls.
To make his sculptures Spencer first constructs his scenes in a common pattern using clay, and then fires each piece individually, before reassembling them into a permanent installation.

Spencer talks about his unique choice of art medium: “Brick sculpture can be dated back to ancient Babylon but remains a fresh and interesting enhancement to any building, wall or environment. The brick medium has all the same characteristics of durability and low maintenance as a brick building, blends well in settings where other brick construction is present, looks good with landscaping and has a familiarity which is comforting to people.”
