“I wanted to mix all my pictorial and graphic styles. I started working with a great photographic collage, thorough a long research of images. In some cases, I made the shots by myself, reshaping contrasts according to the effect I needed. “The research lasted a whole month, only for the draft. Then the realization took another month for the canvas.

Guernica parallelism

Picasso built Guernica suddenly and instinctively, following the bombing of Guernica in 1937 while he was in Paris. The work was exhibited for many years at Moma in New York, then returned to Spain in 1981, at Reina Sofia museum in Madrid.“Somehow, fate led me to carry out this personal reinterpretation in a historic moment of isolation, in March 2020, due to the lockdown. To draw an almost poetic parallel between the current historical period and the epoch in which Picasso’s work was born, Coronavirus represents our personal war, which influences and inspires our activity, our creations, and our reinterpretations.”

However, Max Petrone’s work was not born as a tribute or reflection on the period we are experiencing. “Like Picasso, I found myself making some changes to the subjects at the moment, to immerse the subjects in the most current topic around us.”

Even for Picasso, Guernica was initially born as a representation of the death of the famous bullfighter José Gòmez Ortega and then undergoes changes that link it to the tragedy of Guernica and instill a new historical sense.Max has put himself in Pablo’s shoes working day by day, respecting the original work but at the same time putting into practice his teaching and therefore stealing.

Alessandro Pisani for Gray Ladder documented and immortalized every single phase of the process.
