Hannah Black’s artistic work takes the form of performances, installations or film and video works. The title-giving video essay Dede, Eberhard, Phantom was created for the Kunstverein Braunschweig. The video material is structured along three interviews and thematic strands – two historically based and one fictional – dedicated to the organization of perception. The interviewees talk about their encounters with those elusive personalities to whom the title refers as personally as they do insistently. The formal layout of the video reflects the sensory regime defined for each figure.

In the strand associated with Dede, Ramey Ward, the daughter of the pioneering Hollywood film editor Dede Allen, describes her mother’s life and career and her relationship. These sequences are used for editing – cutting, connecting or separating – the two other strands.

Eberhard in turn refers to an exhibition that the artist Clemens von Wedemeyer realized in 2014 at the Kunstverein Braunschweig. This was based on von Wedemeyer’s research into the history of the building, which in the 1930s housed a language institute under the direction of Eberhard Zwirner, the grandfather of gallerist David Zwirner. These sequences refer to the specific context of the Kunstverein Braunschweig and the institutionalization of art in general.

The core element of the video is an interview with Raymond Pinto, performer of a Broadway production of the musical Phantom of the Opera and sometimes substitute actor for the leading role, who hides the functional aspects of the staging and his role in it. The video work is accompanied by installation elements based on wooden grids.

Hannah Black (* 1981 in Manchester, UK, lives in New York City) completed an MFA in Art Writing at Goldsmith College London in 2013 and the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York the following year. Hannah Black has realized solo projects in mumok, Vienna, at the Chisenhale Gallery, London (both 2017), in Eden Eden, Bortolozzi, Berlin or in the Performance Space, New York (both 2019).
