…turns out GM’s developed a $9,000 pickup truck for the Chinese market.
That’s the 2021 Zhengtu (Chinese for “Expedition”), a 1.5-liter, four cylinder, 99 horsepower rear-wheel-drive pickup produced in collaboration with China’s Wuling Motors. It’s not too easy on the eyes, though it is interesting to see what 58,800 yuan (USD $9,029) gets you out East.
The truck has got the triple tailgate configuration common in Japanese kei trucks, with a provision to hold them in a horizontal position. The bed is 2 meters (6′ 6 3/4″) long, which actually beats the standard pickup beds (6′ 5″) on the U.S. market, to say nothing of the short boxes. And there’s no wheel wells to deal with.
You can get the Zhengtu in whatever color you want, as long as it’s one of these four:
One weird thing you might notice in the photos, is that the roll cage apparently disappears when the tailgates are folded down. These are press photos supplied by Wuling, so I’m not sure what’s up with that.
