HIMACS Encourages Innovative Designs at Rycotewood College

A bit of healthy competition can be a wonderful thing for pushing the boundaries of creativity. Students at the UK’s Rycotewood College, with the help of HIMACS supplier James Latham Ltd, were challenged to create storage designs incorporating curves and vibrant color using HIMACS, a versatile solid surface material. As part of the 2022 students’ competition, they spent a 10-week period coming up with their unique designs. The winning entry – a contemporary bar cabinet by Yuchen Liu – features an S-shaped curve that showcases HIMACS’ seamless joints and consistency.

Liu’s winning bar cabinet uses HIMACS’ bright orange color paired with stained European oak for high visual interest. The judges appreciated the way Liu created a seamless S-shaped curve across the length of the top of the cabinet, continuing it down its side before tapering off. He mentioned just how impressed he was with the material’s ability to hold a better shape and surface definition than bent laminate wood.

Liu said, “The beauty of HIMACS is you can create invisible joints. To look at the surface few would guess it had been formed from four separate pieces, and it was great to be able to apply the same woodworking skills for wood to a completely different material.”
