Historical portraits painted on flattened beer cans

Combining crushed cans and painted historical portraits, Kim Alsbrooks has created a uniquely interested art series titled ‘My White Trash Family.’

Alsbrooks began painting historical portraits onto crushed drink cans back in 2004 to put the images on consumer leftovers. To do the works, she applies a gesso layer on the bottom, draws the image in pencil and then paints the portrait in oil. She doesn’t crush the cans herself — instead, she finds cans that have previously been trampled and crushed that are without wrinkles.

Alsbrooks has painted more than 700 of these portraits. For more of her work, visit her website.
