House on stilts designed to withstand deadly calamities boasts glass wall, sliding steel panels

With the shoot to fame of movies and TV shows that revolve around themes such as virus outbreaks, zombies and the apocalyptic “end of the world”, one may start to think of the dreadful possibilities. After all, who’s to say when the end will come? But the cult following has blended in well with the media. Surprisingly, as well as architecture.

The Sol Duc Cabin, designed by Olson Kundig Architects, is specifically built as a safe house for severe flooding but can possibly withstand doomsday itself. It is designed with steel panels that can be slid aside to reveal sweeping glass walls. A floor-to-ceiling steel wall is suspended on the side of the house with the help of a cantilevered beam. If worse comes to worst, it can be slid to protect the front of the house. It is raised from the ground with steel stilts and designed with wood as the primary material for the interiors to show contrast and durability.
