How artists from centuries ago searched for ‘Big Bird’ and never got the answer until recently

Hundreds of years ago, artists only dreamed of creating life-sized portraits of birds. When the field of ornithology found its grounding in science, 16th-century painters and artists looked for materials to create realistic renderings of various bird species. However, at the time, there wasn’t a large enough piece of paper or canvass to work with.

300 years later, the material finally became available. It was John James Audubon who became the first person to depict full-scale and high-quality portraits of birds on a smooth surface.

Today, we celebrate these milestones and obstacles in an exhibition called Big Bird: Looking for Lifesize. The show hosts 28 artworks from 2 time periods, dating as far back as the 1500s.
