In this tutorial I start with a rough idea of a fierce huge nomad warrior with a hammer fighting a platoon of soldiers in the rain. First, I have the background color set using gradient tool. I draw the shape of the main character using lasso tool. Then I paint inside the silhouette with texture brushes to convey the lighting and textures. I add some fur on his shoulder and cloak. At this point, I am only concern with shapes and lighting. After that I paint rough characters on the foreground and background. Then I use lasso tool to create some line of trees and foliage in the background. Once I have my scene fully composed. Then I add heavy rain drops in the scene using custom brush. At this stage, I only focus on big shapes, lightning and base to get the overall look and feel of the scene first. In this case, I decide that if I have some lightening in the back and give the scene a back lighting situation, it would look more interesting. Then I add some lightening behind the trees so that I can create the bright shining light area in far back. Once all the elements and composition is set with good lighting then we can start doing a bit more detail.
You have to first take care of the big shape then you can think about adding design and little detail.
I use a lot of normal layer and just paint like I would paint traditionally in this video. But with a lot of help from custom brushes. Hopefully this can be really helpful to you all.
Again I usually start my image from shapes and build those shape up along with composition in mind. The lighting and value.
Tips on speedpainting. Keep it simple first and make your image clear and easy to read or identify.
