The tech industry often sounds like a frightening place with lots of gates and fences that are rarely ever opened to let anyone new in. The fact is, however, that the field is rapidly growing. As of September 2022, employment in the tech industry is already 46% ahead of 2021 and 92% ahead of 2019. So even if you have never worked in the field before, there is no reason to count yourself out. As Charlotte explained, it only took her 4 years to climb up the ladder enough to start making 6 figures. There are certainly entry-level tech jobs available for whoever is willing to work hard and learn new skills.

And as Charlotte also noted, we should never put limitations on ourselves when applying for jobs. Often times, the “requirements” for a position are not set in stone, so you might be able to learn the necessary skills while on the job. Highlight the skills you do have, and show that you’re willing to learn. As Sarah Liu, founder and managing director of The Dream Collective, told Urban List, “Technology companies are aiming to solve big problems, so focus on their larger mission when considering a new role and assess how your current skills and strengths can help these companies achieve or further their mission.”

Sometimes, it can even give you an advantage to be an outsider to the tech field. According to research from Glassdoor, 43% of positions advertised by tech companies are actually non-technical, meaning you do not need to understand tech lingo or have any specific degree to get hired. “In fact, this could work to your advantage,” Sarah Liu says. “Many companies we work with are interested in candidates from a non-tech background, particularly for sales teams, as they bring a different perspective to how they communicate technology.”

The tech industry is rapidly evolving and growing, and while not everyone may be interested in joining, there is plenty of room for people who are determined, willing to learn and happy to apply for positions they might not be qualified for on paper.
