Last year, we shared our excitement over the Growroom, a spherical and sustainable solution to urban farming designed by Space10 (a “future-living lab” launched by IKEA in 2015). It was merely a highly anticipated prototype at the time; however, IKEA has made it a reality. The innovative furniture retailer recently released instructions allowing anyone to build their own DIY greenhouse.

Composed of a series of stacked plant boxes, the globular Growroom’s goal is to offer “food that tastes better, is healthier for us, more nutritional and doesn’t put massive pressure on our dwindling supplies of fresh water nor our environment.” In order to introduce Growrooms into as many cities as possible, designers Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum have again teamed up with IKEA to share its design with the public, inviting anyone and everyone to construct their own greenhouse using locally-sourced materials.
The 17-step instructions detail how to produce your own gorgeous Growroom and the supplies necessary to do so. The list—which includes 17 pieces of plywood, 2 rubber hammers, a screwdriver, 500 stainless pan head screws, some downloads, and a rendez-vous at your local fab lab or studio with a CNC milling machine (Google will help you track these down)—may seem daunting, but, like all IKEA DIY, “the design focuses on making the assembly easy and intuitive for anyone to handle,” citing a dual focus on accessibility and affordability. So, with close reading, a little bit of creativity, and a lot of patience, you can sprout your own orb-shaped oasis in no time.
